Roommate Fight Leaves East Bay Man Dead Overnight

Detectives weigh self-defense claim and await autopsy findings after a man was found dead overnight.

| Updated

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A violent confrontation inside a home ended with one man dead, another detained and released, and investigators examining whether the fatal encounter was an act of self-defense.

Police responded about 11:16 p.m. Saturday to the 1900 block of Wilson Court in Antioch after emergency crews reported an unconscious man inside the home.

Antioch police said officers arrived to find paramedics trying to revive the man, but he died at the scene.

Detectives believe the man lost consciousness during a physical fight with a roommate. Police detained a 47-year-old resident of the home for questioning, but made no arrest.

Lt. Bill Whitaker said investigators are awaiting autopsy results and a review by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office before deciding whether charges are warranted, according to the East Bay Times. Whitaker told reporters the evidence so far points toward self-defense, the Times reported.

Investigators said the altercation involved no weapons.

Crime scene investigators and Antioch’s Violent Crimes Unit are handling what is now the city’s third homicide investigation of the year. One of Antioch’s earlier homicide cases was also ruled justified because of self-defense, according to police.

Antioch police recorded two homicide investigations at the same time in 2025.
