CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A barricaded man who threatened officers, refused to leave an apartment, and allegedly threatened to set the building on fire surrendered peacefully after a five-hour standoff Saturday, ending a tense response that forced nearby residents from their homes.
Police responded at about 11 a.m. Saturday to the 1600 block of Aster Drive after a 911 caller reported a disturbance involving a man who was possibly injured and bleeding inside an apartment, according to the Antioch Police Department.
Officers identified the man as Kevin Henry, 46, of Antioch, who police said had an outstanding felony warrant for violating the terms of his post-release community supervision following his release from state prison.
Police said officers repeatedly urged Henry to leave the apartment so he could receive medical treatment.
Instead, he refused, barricaded himself inside, threatened to harm officers, threatened to set the apartment on fire, and was seen with a gasoline container.
Police evacuated nearby apartments while crisis negotiators, SWAT, and Contra Costa Health's A3 (Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime) mobile crisis response team tried to persuade Henry to surrender.
Henry walked out of the apartment shortly after 4 p.m. and surrendered without further incident, police said.
Paramedics evaluated Henry at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
After he is medically cleared, he is expected to be booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on the outstanding felony warrant.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office will determine whether additional charges are filed, according to police.
The Antioch Police Department credited the Brentwood and Pittsburg police departments, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office Air Support Unit, Contra Costa Health's A3 mobile crisis response team, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, American Medical Response, and residents in the neighborhood for assisting during the incident.
