CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A man suspected of a felony allegedly smuggled a gun into a police department holding cell and shot an officer who entered to transport him to county jail Thursday afternoon, according to reports.
The police officer suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, while the suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle inside the Pittsburg police station, the Mercury News reported.
Authorities transported both to hospitals and said they are expected to survive. Officials did not identify either man, according to reports.
Initial reports conflicted over whether the leg wound injured the suspect or a second officer.
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said crews responded to a medical-aid call at the police department, located at 65 Civic Ave.
The extent of the reported second officer's injuries is unknown.
A third person reportedly suffered injuries during a struggle inside the holding cell after the shooting, KRON reported.
The incident forced officials to shut down the police station and adjoining City Hall. By 5 p.m., crime-scene tape partitioned off both buildings as city employees left without responding to inquiries, according to reports.
The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office opened a third-party investigation. Police said they expected to release more information Thursday evening.
