1. Oprah's Book Club Favorite Picked As Contra Costa Book Of The Year (patch.com) — Readers in Concord and across Contra Costa are invited to join the 2026 Read Contra Costa program, which features Oakland author Leila Mottley's new novel, "The Girls Who Grew Big." Running from October 1 to November 14, the countywide initiative encourages residents to read and discuss the same book, with copies available now in multiple formats through the library system.
2. Suspected Fairfield Norteños came to Concord. But were they trying to kill 'Goofy' or teach him a lesson? (mercurynews.com) — A high-profile gang assault case in Concord is heading to trial, after a judge reduced attempted murder charges against two Fairfield brothers to assault and related counts. Jurors will weigh whether the alleged Norteño members conspired to attack a rival tagger near Highway 242, in a clash tied to Monument Boulevard gang tensions that has Concord residents watching closely.
3. Michael Rigsby killed in motorcycle accident on California 4 (newsline.com) — A Brentwood motorcyclist was killed on Sept. 21 in a collision involving two vehicles on westbound Highway 4 near Port Chicago Highway in Concord. CHP says drugs and alcohol were not factors, and the investigation continues, while legal experts urge families to follow the case and understand their rights after such crashes.
4. Invasive Aedes Aegypti Mosquitos Found in Discovery Bay (contracosta.news) — County vector control officials based in Concord have confirmed invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Discovery Bay and warn that similar introductions were previously eliminated in small areas of Concord with strong resident cooperation. Concord and Contra Costa residents are urged to dump standing water weekly, report daytime-biting mosquitoes, and use recommended repellents to help prevent these disease-carrying insects from becoming established.
5. California laws add protections for sexual assault survivors on college campuses (napavalleyregister.com) — New California laws aim to better protect sexual assault survivors, including college students, and one key measure comes from Concord's own Sen. Tim Grayson. His bill tightens privacy rules around explicit evidence in criminal cases, while other legislation requires universities to strengthen training and reporting on human trafficking, changes that could affect local students and families across the state.
