Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. An Amtrak train running through unincorporated Brentwood smashed into a car containing five people Sunday afternoon at a private crossing with no gates, killing three and leaving an adult and a child hospitalized with "major injuries." The collision occurred on the 3000 block of Orwood Road, on a dirt road. None of the 85 people onboard the train were injured. (Patch)
  2. ConFire responded to multiple reports of a fence and trees on fire between Belmont Road and Pine Street, near the canal area, in Concord on Monday afternoon. People on the ground also reported hearing a "firework pop" immediately prior to the fire starting. This was a breaking story at the time of writing and no further information was available. (Claycord.com)
  3. A Walnut Creek company has been named Diablo Magazine's Best of the Best caterer of the East Bay for the second year in a row. According to News 23/680, "AWG Private Chefs proudly employs the only two Certified Master Chefs in Northern California and specializes in private in-home dining experiences and catering utilizing only locally sourced, organic and GMO free ingredients." Congratulations on the accolades AWG! (News 24/680)
  4. For properties in a flood zone, the cost of flood insurance premiums can be staggering, so what can the city of Concord do to help? The city participates in the Community Rating System (CRS). By participating in the CRS, Concord is designated as a class level, which earns a percent discount for all flood insurance policyholders within the city. You may not need it for the next few months, as drought and fires are on our minds, but come winter, with the burns that are happening, flooding may be at the forefront of your concerns and lower premiums may make it more appealing to get that insurance. (City of Concord)
  5. Antioch police have released preliminary information on three shootings that happened in the city over the weekend. There were no reported injuries from any of the shootings, but several spent shell casings were recovered and a bullet was found inside the home of one of the victims. (East County Today)
