Announcing a Social Skills Group for Teens
Co-facilitated by Debra Frank, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Debbie Lindstrom, LIcensed Educational Psychologist

Our social skills groups are committed to helping adolescents better understand social environments by teaching social, emotional, and organizational skills in a structured environment. Some issues we will be exploring are:
- Difficulties in social situations including conflict, bullying, teasing or social isolation.
- Maladaptive use of aggressive or passive strategies in conflict situations with others.
- Difficulties participating in group or team activities.
- Difficulties identifying feelings and showing understanding for other people’s feelings.
- Shyness that interferes with connecting with peers.
- Social anxieties and social phobias.
- Difficulties in reading nonverbal social cues.
- Difficulties with social problem solving.
- Difficulties making and keeping friends.
Good social skills are critical to successful functioning in life. These skills enable us to know what to say, how to make good choices, and how to behave in diverse situations. The extent to which children and adolescents possess good social skills can influence their academic performance, behavior, social and family relationships, and involvement in extracurricular activities. While most children pick up positive skills through their everyday interactions with adults and peers, it is important that parents reinforce this casual learning with direct and indirect instruction. We must also recognize when and where children pick up behaviors that might be detrimental to their development or safety. With a full repertoire of social skills, adolescents will have the ability to make social choices that will strengthen their interpersonal relationships.
The group will be facilitated by Debra Frank, MFT, and Debbie Lindstrom,
Licensed Educational Psychologist.
