🌱Another Starbucks for Concord? + MLB Gains Acalanes Grad

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Concord.

(Patch Media)

Hi all! I'm back in your inbox this morning with all the most important things happening these days in town.

First, today's weather:

Warm with plenty of sunshine. High: 92 Low: 57.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Concord who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Concord Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Join the debate! How many Starbucks does Concord need? This article from Claycord.com says that Starbucks is going in to the old KFC location on Monument has sparked a debate in the replies. Do we already have too many? Will there be a Starbucks on every corner? Or do we need more so lines of cars won't block traffic at the ones we already have? Chime in with your opinion. (Claycord.com)
  2. Speaking of Starbucks, 54-year-old Steven John Novell of Walnut Creek has been charged with 83 felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from the installation of hidden cameras at a Starbucks in downtown Walnut Creek. Charges range from eavesdropping and burglary to attempting to make child pornography. He was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Center on August 25. According to Claycord.com "law enforcement is actively looking to talk with anyone who was at the Starbucks in Walnut Creek on June 4 between the hours of 3:30 and 5 p.m., and July 23 between the hours of 3:30 and 5 p.m." Anyone with information about this case should contact Walnut Creek Detective Tyler Bertolozzi at tbertolozzi@walnutcreekpd.com. (Claycord.com)
  3. Incumbents Susan Candell, Teresa Gerringer and Wei-Tai Kwok have been appointed by the Lafayette City Council to serve another term. The City Council voted to appoint them after nobody else filed to run for the seats. Under state law, the City Council may forego a vote and appoint nominees to council seats if nobody else has been nominated. The councilmembers' candidate statements are available at this News 24/680 link. (News 24/680)
  4. Mayor Lamar Thorpe called out one of his constituents on social media after a comment the man made during a heated conversation at a city council meeting. According to NBC Bay Area "the comment was made during a meeting to discuss the appointment of Cornelius Johnson as the permanent city manager for Antioch." "That person right there should be promoted to city manager, but maybe she's not Black enough for you," the resident said. NBC Bay Area talked to Mark Jordan, the man who made the comments. ""While there's no state or federal requirement that it be open to everyone, there's the issue of transparency and tradition," he said. "The mayor doesn't promote white individuals or Hispanic or Asian people to positions of power in the city." Mayor Thorpe disputes these allegations and he says he wants to promote civil and respectful discourse in the city. "Antioch is a city of inclusiveness," he said, "and you're still going to have small elements of people who for whatever reason can't get past their own notions [of] other people." (NBC Bay Area)
  5. Acalanes graduate Stefan Raeth, a right-handed pitcher, was selected in the 17th round by the Seattle Mariners. Stefan, his sister Simone and their parents Thomas and Tamara sat together as they watched the draft on TV. "It was very cool and was almost surreal because I knew, when Stefan was young, he had a true passion for the sport," said Thomas. "It was fantastic to see him drafted." As for Stefan, he said "I'm thankful for the opportunity and hopefully it will all work out. I just want to find ways to get better." (lamorindaweekly.com)
