Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. ConFire responded to Monument Plaza yesterday after reports of flames near Reganti Drive and Lacey Lane. The fire was coming from the Little Caesars and Fashion Town building. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the Fashion Town side of the building. Everyone was evacuated safely. (Claycord.com)
  2. The Pioneer was out and about this Halloween season, capturing all of the holiday festivities. Check out these fabulous pictures of everything from the dog costume contest put on by Visit Concord to paintball pumpkin shooting to hauntingly spectacular decorations around town. (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. The head of Lafayette's Chamber of Commerce, Jay Lifson, is retiring after 17 years. Mayor Teresa Gerringer likens Lifson to the Energizer Bunny. "If something good for the community and our businesses is happening, Jay is there! Lafayette is a better place because of his creativity and tireless energy." He will be missed. (lamorindaweekly.com)
  4. Today, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will decide whether to close the Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility (OAYRF) out in Byron. The facility is designed to serve low-to-moderate-risk youth. In 2018, the population at OAYRF was 62. Today, there are just 11 residents. The facility requires $5.4 million in deferred maintenance. The population at OAYRF could be redirected to Briones Youth Academy, where they would get essentially the same services, but live at home. (danvillesanramon.com/ subscription may be required.)
  5. Over 700 Antioch Unified eighth-graders participated in an event called "Day of Empowering Girls" on October 27. The event was a collaboration between AUSD and the Antioch Rotary, and featured a motivational and keynote speaker, Tracie Berry McGhee, who "had a strong message that you define who you are and not to be influenced by social media or those who don't have your best interest." A diverse panel of 10 local female professionals discussed their careers and answered students' questions. (East County Today)

Today in Concord:

  • It's roasting season! Try roasting beets, sweet potatoes, squash and even persimmons that you pick up from the Farmers Market at Todos Santos Plaza! (9:00 AM)
  • "If you want to learn more creative writing elements, join [Camp NANOWRIMO] for writing sessions every other Tuesday in November." (4:00 PM)
  • "DJ Delta Dave provides free line dancing lessons with a country-themed night" at Vinnie's Bar in Concord. (8:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • "Read [Visit Concord's] latest blog to discover 8 incredible photo ops in Concord." (Visit Concord via Instagram)
  • I love this story: A guy in Clayton happened to look out the window at his workplace and saw a kid trying to fix his bike. He took pictures as Clayton PD showed up to help, and a public works truck also stopped to lend a hand. Community helping community are always my favorite stories. (Claycord.com)
  • "Dan Hagen, Campolindo's head coach before Kevin Macy, wanted it known that the 'glass ceiling' on the football field [was] broken 28 years ago by Pamela Anderson (now Cridlebaugh), a linebacker, wide receiver and special teams player, who played for the Cougars her senior year and by Kim Henry (now Anderson), a placekicker who played for the JV team as a junior in 1994 and the varsity in 1995."
