Antioch Mayor Apologizes After DUI Arrest

The mayor of a small Bay Area town said he was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol on Saturday morning.

ANTIOCH, CA — The mayor of a small town in Northern California apologized after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Saturday morning.

Lamar Thorpe, the mayor of Antioch, addressed this incident in a video posted to Twitter on Sunday.

"Last night after having dinner with a friend I was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol and cited for driving under the influence," Thorpe said. "For that I take full responsibility."

Thorpe was driving alone in a Volvo on Northbound I-680 near Monument Boulevard when he was a arrested at 1:27 a.m. on Saturday. He was released from jail at 3:35 a.m., according to a release from CHP, KGO-TV reported.

"I felt it was important to be open and direct with you," he said. " Although I never felt inhibited by the drink I had with my dinner, I'm deeply sorry for the lapse in judgment and I hope that you can forgive me."

City Councilmember Mike Barbanica said Thorpe should resign immediately, KGO-TV reported.

"We need our public officials our elected officials to be held to a higher standard," Barbanica said. "I am asking the mayor step down, deal with your legal issue that occurred recently and don't put the city through this."
