Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Concord police are asking for your help in locating an at-risk male who went missing from The Veranda shopping center on Wednesday. Kevin Chandler went missing around 3:00 p.m. and is considered at-risk because of a mental condition. Police describe him as being six feet nine inches tall, so he should stand out in a crowd. (Concord Patch)
- Contra Costa Christian Schools sent kids in after-school classes home early on March 1 and, out of an abundance of caution, canceled classes on March 2 due to a series of phone calls and email threats that appeared to be escalating. Danielle Nye, of Antioch, is now in custody related to those incidents, according to Walnut Creek police. "At this time, there is no known threat to CCCS' staff or students. It appears this was an isolated incident and WCPD will continue follow up investigation to confirm no one else was involved." (Claycord.com)
- Want to report a crime on the Bay Area Rapid Transit? BART has an app for that! BART police want you to know that the app is private and easy to use and is the best way to report incidents to them. (Claycord.com)
- A police pursuit ended in an accident at Morello Avenue and Vili Way in Pleasant Hill early Thursday. A woman attempted to evade police, taking them on a high speed chase. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene of the crash and was given medical attention as a precaution. (News 24/680)
- Pamela Swicegood is the Antioch Unified School District Teacher of the Year. Swicegood has "taught English, Jazz Dance, ELD, Creative Writing, and Poetry, and coached cheerleading, track, lacrosse and a competition dance team. She also produced two dance shows a year for 20 years, sponsored the AHS Poetry and Short Story contests and has been the advisor for the Pantheon Literary Magazine since 1991. Most recently, she started the Shakespeare & Scones Society, an after-school club designed to make the Bard fun and accessible for kids." Whew! With a resume like that, no wonder she's Teacher of the Year! Congratulations, Ms. Swicegood! (Contra Costa News)
Today in Concord:
- Join the Concord Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps for their All-You-Can-Eat Crab Feed and dance at Centre Concord Event Center (5:00 PM)
- 90's Rock cover band Souvenirs "plays Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Lenny Kravitz, Hootie, and the Blow Fish" at Mike Hess Brewing in Walnut Creek. (5:00 PM)
- Head over to E.J. Phair in Pittsburg for "another fun night of laughs hosted by comedian, Pat McCoy and featuring the comedy of Mean Dave along with Headliner "Chicago" Steve Barkley." (7:30 PM)
From my notebook:
- The kids are getting sick of being cooped up inside with all of this ugly weather, so you're starting to hear "Mom/Dad, what's there to DO?!" as a more frequent refrain. Don't worry. Diablo Magazine has you covered! They've got the most amazing list of fun family-friendly stuff to do in the Tri-Valley! Check it out! (Diablo Magazine)
- "The community is cordially invited to celebrate a ribbon-cutting ceremony jointly hosted by the City of Pinole and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District to recognize the reactivation of Fire Station 74 and the implementation of the collaborative agreement through which Con Fire will provide fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services in Pinole." The event is today at 11! Don't miss it! (Contra Costa News)
- This Sunday the lights will go out on the Bay Bridge indefinitely. That beautiful display of lights was originally an art installation that was only expected to be there for a couple of years, but in 2016, the decision was made to make the lights permanent. Unfortunately, it's costing more money to maintain than originally estimated, so the installation is now scheduled to go dark. Non-profit Illuminate is working to raise the $11 million it would take to bring it to light again. Fingers crossed they can do it! (Jalopnik via MSN)
