Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. The Ouimet family's two youngest kids both have a rare liver disorder, and were both desperately needing kidney transplants until they received life-saving phone calls hours apart. For the family from Antioch, this incredibly tough journey began roughly 10 years ago.
Matthew Ouimet first received a liver and kidney transplant at the age of 2. Matthew wasn't alone. His sibling Carswell Ouimet was also diagnosed with the same disease. After years of waiting for a kidney transplant, less than two weeks ago, Carswell got the news they desperately wanted to hear. As fate would have it, the day Carswell came out of surgery, the next call came for Matthew as his original donated kidney had slowly deteriorated for years. The family is hoping its story will inspire others to give the gift of life. (CBS San Francisco)
  2. On Tuesday, the Walnut Creek City Council voted to legalize delivery of adult-use, non-medical marijuana within city limits. The council capped the number of delivery services that can operate in the city to three. They expect one service to be HerbNJoy, the city's lone provider of medical marijuana. Deliveries will have to be made to a fixed residential address, drivers won't be able to exceed the state limit of how much product they can carry ($5,000 worth) and must deliver straight to customers without stopping anywhere else. 3. In a reversal from Thursday's news, BART has announced that pending any future developments from the local, state, or federal level, masks are now optional and strongly encouraged on BART. BART Board President Rebecca Saltzman announced the Board of Directors will consider a proposal to continue to require masks in the BART system at its next meeting on Thursday, April 28. Stay tuned... (Claycord.com)
  4. A twisting, often wrong-way pursuit over rain slickened streets made its way through a good portion of Lafayette early Thursday before the white work van being pursued crashed at 16 E. Altarinda Drive in Orinda. The driver, whose name was not available at press time, ran from the disabled vehicle and reportedly began jumping fences before deputies and Lamorinda police closed in. (News 24/680)
  5. Facing a third consecutive dry year and responding to a new executive order from Gov. Newsom aimed at bolstering statewide water supplies, Contra Costa Water District's Board of Directors adopted a new Drought Management Program at its April 20 meeting. The move brings the District into Stage 2 of its Water Shortage Contingency Plan, adds new water use restrictions, and aims for an overall 15% reduction in water use as compared to 2020. Full details of the Drought Management Program are available at ccwater.com. (East County Today)
