Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. Your trees might be dying of thirst — literally. When droughts like we've had meet hot weather, like we've really had, trees suffer. They become more susceptible to pests and disease. A dead tree can't provide the shade we need for relief from the sun and for our animal friends, so keeping them alive is imperative. "People often don't think trees, especially mature trees, need to be irrigated, but that is not the case," Darya Barar of East Bay-based HortScience Bartlett Consulting said. Barar added that, when irrigating a tree, the hose should be left in place for a couple of hours, allowing the water to penetrate the soil. As a general rule, "anytime you notice the soil is drying out, you want to start irrigating again," Barar said. (Claycord.com)
  2. Did you have to wait for your BART train on Thursday? That's because the system decided to take it "slow and steady" due to the heat. With so many issues with the tracks due to the scorching heat, BART decided slower is better, resulting in delays of up to 20 minutes. If it's a choice between a delay and a derailment from a buckling track or equipment fatigue, I'll take the delay every time. (Claycord.com)
  3. One of the Marsh Creek Detention Facility escapees was captured in Vallejo on Thursday. Gerardo Ramirez-Vera was arrested in a Vallejo hotel room. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. His co-escapee, Jorge Garcia-Escamillia, is still at large. (News 24/680)
  4. On September 12, Tri Delta Transit will make several significant changes to its routes. Tri Delta Transit worked with a consultant, Advanced Mobility Group, to conduct an extensive community outreach in order to determine the best routing for the community and the future of the service. "Tri Delta Transit regularly evaluates its service, but felt it was important to hear from the people and communities we serve," stated CEO Transition Officer Jeanne Krieg. You can see the new routes and times at this link from East County Today. (East County Today)
