Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Did you notice that one of the southbound lanes on the Benicia Bridge was closed Monday and today? Well, it will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, too. Caltrans is doing its biennial structure inspections. Slow down, be patient and watch for workers. It'll all be over soon. (Claycord.com)
- Check out the picture in this article. It sure looks like somebody discarded a bomb in a dumpster near the 300 block of Camelback Road in Pleasant Hill! So much so that someone called the Pleasant Hill PD to report it. PHPD wasn't even sure what they were looking at so they interrupted traffic for a bit and called in the Walnut Creek bomb squad. Turns out it was just a toy. Pleasant Hill Police are still commending the people who called in the sighting. "If you see something, say something" is still a good mantra. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Speaking of shocking photo shots, here's another doozy. Check out this picture of a car-b-que on I-680 near Crow Canyon Road! No word on how the blaze got started, but it sure made for a memorable pic on someone's iPhone! (News 24/680)
- A pair of masked bandits allegedly tried to break into an ATM at the Kwik Stop location on Golden Gate Way in Lafayette on Sunday. The pair were seen wearing ski masks and carrying a saw. Employees chased them off and they made a clean getaway. There was another report of an attempt at another ATM later in the day, this time in San Ramon, but that report has not been substantiated. (News 24/680)
- At least three lanes of traffic were blocked early Monday morning on Westbound Highway 4 at Hillcrest in Antioch while police investigated a shooting. There was at least one victim who suffered from a gunshot wound. It was reported that an alleged road rage situation initiated the gunplay. No further details were known at the time of this writing. (East County Today)
Today in Concord:
- Head over to Todos Santos Plaza for the Concord Farmers Market. I hear the pears are coming into season and are delicious! (9 a.m.)
- Eats and Beats Food Trucks are at Giacomelli Park in Pittsburg. Grab n go or Bring a lawn chair or blanket and stay a while. (5 p.m.)
- It's Family Fun Night at the Westwind Drive-in in Concord. Adults $5.75, $2 kids 5-11. Most screens are double features - two movies for one price. (5:30 p.m.)
From my notebook:
- Head into Downtown Walnut Creek on Sunday, Sept 18 for a day full of vintage cars, music, beer, food and fun for the entire family. The WCD Rotator Classic Car Show is Walnut Creek's homage to iconic cars and the people who meticulously care for them.
- Interested in learning more about the Antioch Council of Teens? The ACT serves as the youth voice for teen-centric programming for the city of Antioch. Attend their Information Meeting on Wednesday, September 14.
- Did you feel the earthquake? Maybe your neighbor told you about it and you thought they were crazy - but they weren't! It was a tiny temblor near the Caldecott Tunnel. Registering 2.9 on the Richter scale, you had to be pretty attentive to feel it, but apparently someone in Martinez reported feeling it, so your Concord neighbor might have, too! No damage or disruptions were reported. (East Bay Times)
