Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. Financial skills are imperative as an adult, but are not always taught in school, so send your 12 - 18 year old to this boot camp! Travis Credit Union is offering a "Mad City Money Youth Financial Boot Camp," designed to prepare your kids with personal finance skills to help them be successful. "Mad City Money is a three-and-a-half-hour simulation that gives young adults the chance to make decisions regarding budgeting, spending, and saving in an assigned-life scenario. For example, each participant will be given a temporary identity that includes an occupation, salary, debt, marital status, children, etc. The goal is to show the reality of financial responsibilities and equip them with the skills needed to make better financial decisions." (Contra Costa Herald)
  2. The county coroner has identified the three women killed in the Brentwood Amtrak collision. Dixon residents Julia Mondragon, 41, and Maria Nieves, 72, were killed along with 51-year-old Brentwood resident Mercedes Regalado. Two others in the car, a man and a child, suffered major injuries. BNSF Railway, owner of the tracks where the collision occurred, is investigating. (Bay City News)
  3. Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, Contra Costa County officials in a joint news release warned the community about the extreme dangers of fireworks, especially amid the high fire risk throughout the area. "All fireworks, regardless of type or labeling, are illegal everywhere in Contra Costa County," the release stated. There are no Safe and Sane fireworks in the county. Initial fines for violators could reach $100, the release said. (Concord Patch)
  4. The Concord Blue Devils are headed to Mississippi! They will be competing in the 50th Anniversary edition of DCI Southern Mississippi on Wednesday July 27. "Hosted by The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band at USM, more than 1,000 student musicians and performers from across the country will be part of this entertaining and competitive event." If you want to head out to Mississippi to cheer them on, tickets for the event start at $25. To purchase, call 317-275-1212 or visit dci.fan/22Hattiesburg. Tickets will also be sold at the stadium box office on the day of the show and special group rates are available. (usm.edu)
  5. About 4,000 people were without power in Clayton and Concord on Monday night, according to PG&E. Most of the outages were in Clayton, south of Clayton Road and southwest of Marsh Creek Road. As of this writing, the cause of the outage was still under investigation. (Claycord.com)
