Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- Danville and Lafayette are two of five cities in the Bay Area that have canceled city council elections due to a dearth of candidates. The others are Hillsborough, Mill Valley and Cotati. "Municipalities have the ability, per the elections code, to cancel their contest if less than or the exact number of candidates have filed for the available seats," said Dan Miller, who manages candidate filing for the Marin County Elections Department. Local election officials said the movement from at-large elections, where the highest vote-getters win, regardless of address, to district elections in which one person represents select neighborhoods based on geography or interest, is the root cause of elections being canceled. Redwood City, for example, went from one at-large election to seven district elections. This creates a smaller pool of potential candidates for each election. Officials said this is a trend that is likely to continue. (Claycord.com)
- It's raining, it's pouring, Concord! Contra Costa County is expected to get up to an inch of rain with this storm. Click this article to see the rain totals through Wednesday. (Claycord.com)
- Contra Costa County has ranked second in the nation for the lowest death rate from COVID-19 of counties with a population of more than 1 million. Starting Oct. 1, Contra Costa Health will gradually begin to scale back the availability of COVID-19 services and direct residents back to their regular healthcare providers. At the same time, CCH will work with local healthcare providers to ensure testing, vaccines and treatments are available to everyone. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Have you seen the dude holding the fish in in West Commons Park in Moraga? He's a cool new art exhibit called "The Fisherman." It looks like he's sinking into the earth while presenting passers-by with the fish he just caught. It's the first installation of art in the new park. "This park is the perfect canvas for exhibiting art in public spaces," Art in Public Spaces Committee Chairperson Teresa Onoda stated. "It helps to create a visual experience almost like an outdoor art museum." (lamorindaweekly.com)
- Antioch Sports Legends has selected Deer Valley High School Track & Field Coach Bernard Stephens as Class of 2022 Outstanding Coach. Stephens will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a gala on October 1 at Lone Tree Golf & Event Center. The Antioch Sports Legends wing is part of the Antioch Historical Museum. You can attend the gala and congratulate Stephens, if you like. Tickets are $85 and you can get them by calling Antioch Sports Legends at 925-238-0565 or Program Coordinator Louie Rocha at 925-522-1007. (Antioch Herald)
