Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Turns out the Clayton Smarties are pretty smart! The team of seven girls from Mt. Diablo Elementary School finished in third place in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University in May. According to The Pioneer "The Clayton community rallied around the team, supporting a Go Fund Me campaign that generated $4,165 to help get the team and their supplies to Iowa." "Odyssey can help you with social anxiety, thinking skills, opening your mind to new things and, most of all, you get to have fun while doing it," one of the young participants said. - From the Contra Costa County Office of Education: Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) is proud to recognize and celebrate six local student recipients of National Merit Scholarship Awards. These awards are sponsored by colleges and corporations as part of the 67th annual edition of the distinguished program. During the 2022 competition, more than 7,200 Finalists were selected to receive National Merit Scholarships totaling nearly $28 million. (News 24/680)
- Jennifer Decarlo, a 34-year-old female and Oakley resident has been arrested and charged with 21 felonies related to lewd and lascivious acts with minors between the ages of 13 and 16 years old. The alleged criminal acts occurred between January 2022 and March 2022. Decarlo is currently in custody on bail of $1,160,000. Based on the facts gathered in this case, the Oakley Police Department believes there may be additional victims of Decarlo. Any additional victims are urged to contact Detective Minister at 925-625-8822 or Dispatch at 925-625-8060. (East County Today)
- Lafayette Parks, Trails and Recreation Commissioner Mark Poole is stepping down from his volunteer role after 15 years. Per Lamorinda Weekly "Poole will be ending his term due to his workload increasing and demanding more of his time, but he also says 15 years on the commission leave him believing it's time for new ideas and new energies." Poole is a Deputy Attorney General for the California Department of Justice whose work centers on environmental law. Among the many projects during Poole's years on the commission and its subcommittees are the Petanque Courts and Multi-Sport Rink, improvements to the Community Park Play Area, dedication of the Bellenger Trail, renovation of the Cedar Room, Brook Street Park, and Community Center restrooms and the construction of the Jennifer Russell Building. - Walnut Creek Downtown presents Arts Around August. It's a full month of celebration of the arts in Walnut Creek. I think the moveable feast looks like fun! And I'd love to see what the Fantasy Forum Wizard of Oz is all about!
- San Ramon has published its weekly update and there's some really interesting stuff in there. There's info about the summer concert series and a home that has been released for purchase via lottery among many other things. Check it out!
