Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Concord Vice-Mayor Laura Hoffmeister has been found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol. She was sentenced to two days in jail and three years of probation. As part of her sentence Hoffmeister must also complete a three month DUI licensed program and pay a fine of almost $2,000. According to Claycord.com "Hoffmeister, who recently resigned from her day job as the Assistant to the City Manager in Clayton, was arrested on May 26 for DUI after being pulled over by Clayton Police for driving on the wrong side of the road on Pine Hollow Road." The DA and the Clayton police have declined to report what her blood alcohol was at the time of her arrest. (Claycord.com)
- A woman was grazed by gunfire after having her driver's side window allegedly shot out by a passing motorist on Highway 24 in Orinda on Monday night. Police investigated the area of the highway where the woman said the incident took place, but it is believed that they were unable to find any bullet casings. (News 24/680)
- On August 31 and then again on September 7, seventeen search warrants were executed throughout the city of Antioch, related to illegal cultivation of cannabis plants. According to News 24/680 "with the assistance of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and Antioch Code Enforcement, approximately 10,451 unlicensed indoor cannabis plants were seized with an estimated value of $7.3 million." Six firearms were also confiscated. (News 24/680)
- Two homes caught fire in Antioch just before midnight on Monday night. Firefighters responded to a call from one of the houses. Cypress trees that caught fire threw off some embers that likely set the neighboring house's attic on fire. The fire went to two alarms. Contra Costa County Fire is investigating the fire. No injuries were reported. (East County Today)
- Contra Costa County is seeking nominations for Humanitarian of the Year. The award will be given at the 45th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. According to the press release: "in the spirit of Dr. King's work, this year's theme is 'The Future Belongs to All.' Contra Costa County's Board of Supervisors will recognize two individuals, (1) a community member and (2) a student leader, whose dedication to others embodies the spirit and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the January event." The deadline to submit candidates for consideration is Friday, November 4.
