Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Students on a stunt team at Cal High in San Ramon posted pictures posing with a black mannequin head. The head was allegedly being used as the team's unofficial mascot. Needless to say the Instagram page where it was posted, which has since been taken down, garnered some attention and led district administrators to react. According to District Superintendent John Malloy, the investigation into this incident is ongoing and there are plans to meet with all parties involved. He acknowledged the need for more training. - The City of Concord will host a second special joint meeting/workshop of the Planning Commission and Design Review Board on Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. for providing input on a draft framework for the City's "Objective Design Standards" (ODS) for housing projects. This review is in response to the City's April 6 joint special meeting on updating the City's design standards, as a result of recent State housing legislation. The State has limited a local jurisdiction's ability to apply subjective design standards. Going forward, the City can now only rely on the application of objective design standards for most housing projects. Objective Design Standards are those that do not involve discretion or subjective judgment and are verifiable by reference to an external and uniform benchmark or criterion.

If you are a driver, Concord Police is reminding you to remain especially vigilant around motorcycles on the roadways. "Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes. Do not follow a motorcycle too closely. Always keep a safe distance, and if you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Be sure that the rider is turning before moving ahead," they say. - College Park High School seniors got a chance to help the next generation stay in school as they returned to their alma mater elementary school, Gregory Gardens Elementary, to answer questions, hang out on the playground, thank their old teachers and, generally, be role models for the younger kids. The Gregory Gardens kids had a lot of fun asking questions of the grads and helping them celebrate their upcoming big day. Congratulations to the College Park's class of 2022! (Pioneer Publishers)
- About 90 acres of grassland near Highland and Camino Tassajara roads caught fire on Monday driven by strong winds. The fire forced the closure of some roads. No injuries had been reported as of Tuesday morning. (News 24/680)
