Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Francisco Cruz-Madrigal of Concord won $2 million on an Instant Prize Crossword lottery ticket he bought at the Chevron station at 4295 Clayton Road, according to lottery officials. The Mega Millions is now estimated at over $440 million. Maybe Francisco has brought the luck to Concord! Congratulations to Francisco on his winnings! (NBC Bay Area)
  2. East Bay residents had to endure poor air quality over the last couple of days and were urged to remain indoors. The Contra Costa Health Department urged Pittsburg residents to stay inside with doors and windows closed due to hazardous air quality brought on by the Marsh Fire. (Claycord.com)
  3. The town of Danville is now 100% carbon free. According to a news release, "as of July 1, the town has completed the transition to 100% carbon-free electricity to help eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. Ninety percent of Danville residences power their homes with the MCE Light Green 60% renewable energy service. For less than $5 more a month for an average residential customer, you can opt up to Deep Green 100% renewable energy service, eliminating electricity-based greenhouse gas emissions. Let's help make Danville Green! The Town encourages our community to opt up to Deep Green 100% renewable energy." (danville.ca.gov)
  4. In June, artists painted nine murals on the sides of business buildings around Concord, including on Vinnie's Bar and Parkside Grill thanks to Local Edition Creative (LEC). According to co-founders Tari and Sage Loring, LEC's goal is to make "arts and culture accessible to everyone." Concord is a more interesting, more vibrant place thanks to this effort! Check out some of the pictures at this link. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. Contra Costa County rep Eric Swalwell, along with representative Jahana Hayes of Connecticut, have authored a bill to make housing more affordable for teachers. "The bill would establish a new grant program at the Department of Education for local governments and local educational agencies to provide down payment assistance to full-time public-school educators and school staff who are first-time home buyers." It's tough for teachers to find affordable places to live around here. I'm glad help may be on the way. (East County Today)
