Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Another mess plagued BART service between the Concord and Pleasant Hill stations on Tuesday. An equipment failure caused train operators to manually maneuver crossover tracks. Buses were deployed to take travelers between the two stations, but the disruption caused significant delays around morning commute time. The transit authority just spent several weekends upgrading this section of tracks, and I'm sure commuters were not amused. (Patch)
- Select post offices around Contra Costa County have expanded hours for the holiday rush. USPS has a handy tool you can use to input your zip code and find the offices near you that are staying open extended hours. "Additional news and information, including all domestic, international and military mailing and shipping deadlines, can be found on the Postal Service Holiday Newsroom at usps.com/holidaynews." (Claycord.com)
- Contra Costa Health is continuing to investigate what caused a flare-up at the refinery in Martinez on December 9. The agency issued a 72-hour report on the incident, which is available here. (Claycord.com)
- Local high school students Lily Qin and Adelina Zheng exemplify what giving back is all about. They crochet for causes, establishing a nonprofit called Charitable Crochet. These young ladies first crocheted items for donation to charities, but that blossomed into selling these items to donate the proceeds, as well as teaching others to do the same. In all, they've donated over $1,000 to charities thus far. Nice going, ladies! (Pioneer Publishers)
- The good guys outsmarted the bad guys in Walnut Creek Monday night when thieves stole some work tools. Unbeknownst to the thieves, the tools had a tracker on them. Walnut Creek Police were able to quickly locate the vehicle and recover the tools, and the perpetrators were promptly arrested. (News 24/680)
