Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Low humidity and breezy winds, combined with drying fuels, are increasing fire weather risk throughout the Bay Area, with the greatest concern focused on the inland portions of the region including Santa Rosa, Napa, San Rafael, Oakland, Concord and Livermore. The National Weather Service recommends shifting outdoor activities away from the hottest parts of the day, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (NBC Bay Area)
- That large building under construction on Evora Road near Willow Pass Road apparently will house a large collection of animals — stuffed ones. Records show the owner, Albert Seeno Jr., has stated an intent to utilize the warehouse for personal storage of artifacts and taxidermy. The facility will be about 90,000 square feet. That's a lot of stuffed squirrels! (Claycord.com)
- What a mess! A vehicle overturned and a hydrant was destroyed during a two vehicle collision on Clayton Road at Bailey Road in Concord just after 2 p.m. on Monday. There were injuries reported, although they were said to be not life-threatening. The cause of the accident is under investigation. (Claycord.com)
- In a letter to Concord Director of Economic Development and Base Reuse Guy Bjerke, the Discovery/Seeno-led partnership Concord First Partners said the Concord Base reuse project is not financially feasible, and it is unwilling to continue with any further work without a vested interest in the property. Concord First Partners is also asking for a 90-day extension to complete the term sheet and to extend the time to complete the Specific Plan and environmental reports from two years to three. They say unless the Council approves the amendment, they will not proceed past Wednesday when the current ENA expires. The City Council meeting is Tuesday at 6:30 at City Hall, 1950 Parkside Dr. in Concord. A link to watch the meeting online is on the City's website at cityofconcord.org. (Pioneer Publishers)
- The City of Clayton is working to consolidate and communicate budget challenges to the community. The City Council undertook a project to pull in a third party polling company to better understand how a tax measure might fare on the ballot in November. "As suspected, Clayton residents overwhelmingly love our city, police, library and recreation. However, few residents knew of the financial challenges that we face as a city," Mayor Cloven said in an open letter in the Pioneer. Read the rest of his letter and his recommendations on what to do about the budget shortfalls in this article in the Pioneer. (Spoiler alert. It's all about educating Clayton citizens on the virtue of the tax) (Pioneer Publishers)
