Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. If you wear a Rolex, Oakland Police are warning you to beware. Thieves that are after these watches in most cases are armed and they are forcibly taking them from the victim's wrists. They say they have responded to more than 20 calls this year. And Oakland is not alone in these crimes. Walnut Creek and the surrounding areas have seen their share of violent Rolex robberies this year, as well. Authorities advise that, if you are approached, do not resist. Give up your watch and get as accurate a description of the thieves as possible. (Claycord.com)
  2. Concord Police conducted a DUI enforcement patrol on Friday night. As a result one driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI. Concord Police reminds you that DUI is not only related to driving while under the influence of alcohol. Certain prescription medications and even over the counter medications can impair your ability to drive a car. Any medication that urges caution about "using heavy machinery" could impact your ability to drive. (Claycord.com)
  3. Concord has completed two phases of the Utility Box Art Project. Planning for the third phase is underway. The deadline to apply has been extended until September. Phase 1 was completed in 2019 with a theme of "Music and Market." That phase saw nine utility boxes decorated. Phase 2, with a theme of "Celebrate Concord" was done in 2021 and seven more utility boxes were beautifully painted. This year the theme is "Concord Reflections." With the extended deadline, painting is likely to begin next year. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. Orinda resident Joseph Kish faces felony hit and run charges in an incident that occurred in Pinole on July 25. Kish was traveling in the 2100 block of Appian Way when his vehicle struck a 41-year-old male cyclist from Oakland. Kish did not stop after striking the cyclist. The cyclist, who sustained injuries including a broken pelvis, was able to make his way to a nearby motel and call police. An arraignment date for Joseph Kish will be set by the court at a future date. (News 24/680)
  5. This morning the Antioch City Council will discuss a rent stabilization ordinance. The ordinance would seek to cap the amount of rent increase allowable in Antioch. According to the staff report "although the city of Antioch's housing prices are lower than many neighboring cities, rent in the city continues to rise. Many local residents, in particular low-income households, struggle with paying for rising housing costs and meeting other basic needs such as food, transportation and health care. The Rent Stabilization Ordinance is intended to provide stability with respect to rent increases and housing by establishing additional tenant protections exceeding those set forth in state law."
