Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. The eco-friendly goats are back on BART property in Contra Costa eating away at the pesky weeds that are such a fire hazard. They are great at navigating the steep hillsides, and they don't cause sparks, so they are better than the traditional lawn mowers and other equipment, and they're quiet so neighbors like 'em better, too. And, don't worry, the goat keepers made sure there was an electric fence between the goats and the tracks, so they are safe and happy. (Claycord.com)
  2. American Ninja Warrior veteran Sean Bryan of Concord competed in the eighth season of the show six years ago. This season, half of the contestants are ANW vets and Bryan is one of them! He made a strong showing the semi-final and is now on to the finals in Las Vegas. You can stream the NBC show on Peacock+, Hulu and other services. For more about American Ninja Warrior, click here. (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. The City of Concord has completed its annual review of the city's Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) and the Repetitive Loss Properties Report. These reports are a requirement of the Community Rating System (CRS), which is part of the National Flood Insurance Program. Because Concord participates in this program, those living here get a percentage discount on their flood insurance. Both annual reports are available on the city's website. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. San Ramon Valley firefighters were called to the 400 block of Enterprise Drive in Danville on Wednesday. When they got there, they found a house with a fire in the attic. It quickly burned through to engulf the house. The occupant made it out safely. Neighbors were also briefly evacuated. (News 24/680)
  5. On Tuesday night, the Antioch City Council took the first step in approving an updated regulation to allow residents to park recreational vehicles in their front and side yard of their property within the city of Antioch. There will, however, be a cap to the number of permits allowed within the city. Ultimately, the council agreed to a permitting process with no fees. (East County Today)

Today in Concord:

  • Head out to the Orinda Community Center for Food Truck Night. It often has gyros, lobster and Mexican cuisine! (5:00 PM)
  • Have you checked out the Old Town Car Show in Pittsburg this year? It's a fun family event with live music and restaurants nearby on Railroad Avenue between 3rd Street and 6th. (6 p.m.)
  • Don't forget Music and Market tonight at Todos Santos Plaza! (6:30 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • On June 19, the city began work on the Monument Boulevard Class 1 Path with project completion anticipated for summer 2023. The scope of work will consist of constructing a shared-use path on the east side of Monument Boulevard between Cowell Road and Systron Drive and along the north side of Cowell Road between Monument Boulevard and Mesa Street. In order to provide advance notice for lane closures, separate social media posts will be published prior to work commencing at each intersection. (City of Concord, California via Facebook)
  • Rotary Club of Concord's guest speaker on Friday, July 29 is PP & International Service Chair Michael Barrington, the budding author to date of five fiction and fiction-based-on-fact books. He will share his experience and provide insight about what it takes to write a book. (Rotary Club of Concord via Facebook)
  • Monument Crisis Center will be distributing backpacks to students in grades K-12 Saturday, July 30. Pre-registered clients can start receiving backpacks at 9 a.m. The backpack distribution will be open to the public starting at 10:30 a.m. If you are not pre-registered, please bring your ID or MCC card. Backpacks will be given out on a first come, first served basis. (Monument Crisis Center via Facebook)
