Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- One of the largest school districts in the state is now one step closer to a strike by its teachers. 92% of the members of the Mount Diablo Education Association authorized their executive board to ultimately decide in less than two weeks, whether teachers should walk out of their classrooms. A walkout would affect some 29,000 K-12 students across the district in Contra Costa County. "We don't want to strike, but we will, if that is what is necessary to ensure that our students get the education they deserve." Anita Johnson, president of the Mt. Diablo Education Association said. Mt. Diablo educators have not seen a salary increase since 2017. (KTVU2)
- The Concord area rocks it in high school baseball! Clayton Valley Charter of Concord is the new No. 1 in the Northern California Top 20 high school baseball rankings. De La Salle is No.3 followed by California of San Ramon in the No 4. spot. (MaxPreps)
- The Lafayette School District Governing Board has appointed Dr. Brent Stephens as its next Superintendent, effective July 1. The process of selecting the next Superintendent for Lafayette was a community effort, and the Governing Board is grateful to everyone who shared ideas, opinions, and priorities for the district and its leadership during the search process. The input and participation were critical in creating a leadership profile that helped guide the Board in making this appointment. Dr. Stephens holds a doctorate from Harvard University and his work on school reform has been published by Harvard Education Press. When he is not working, he loves to spend time with family, hike the East Bay hills, and make art and music. (News 24/680)
- Abortion protesters may have to keep their distance and the noise down outside Walnut Creek's Planned Parenthood clinic if an ordinance under consideration by the city council is formally approved two weeks from now. If passed, the ordinance would require protestors to stay a set distance away from patients within 100 feet of the clinic. The ordinance appeared headed for approval by the council Tuesday night but support waned as members opted to get a better grasp of what constituted "noise," an issue left open to interpretation and muddied in this case by the clinic's proximity to a noisy freeway. (News 24/680)
- The Oakley Police announced they have made an arrest of a Pittsburg man in connection with a road rage incident that occurred on March 12. According to police, Oakley Police officers were sent to the area of Main Street and Malicoat Avenue for a road rage incident that lead to one motorist shooting at another motorist. No one was struck by gunfire in the incident. The victim of the shooting was able to provide a good description of a very distinctive vehicle. Officers were able to obtain enough evidence and statements to substantiate an arrest of the driver of the suspect vehicle and they took possession of the gun. The suspect in this case is identified as Sergio Cruz-Silva, 32 years old, Pittsburg. (East County Today)
