Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Three East Bay men have pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to deal firearms without a license, some of which were sold to undercover law enforcement agents, federal authorities said.
Troy Elias Walker, 24, of Concord; David Michael Rembert, 42, of Concord; and Daljit Kamal Singh, 27, of Hercules, entered plea agreements April 15 in federal court in Oakland. Court documents describe how law enforcement agents bought 17 machine gun conversion switches for pistols and 13 other firearms over the course of multiple undercover buys in Concord. The undercover firearm purchases also included buys of privately made firearms (aka "ghost guns") in addition to commercially manufactured firearms. Walker, Rembert and Singh each face a maximum term of 5 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. (Concord Patch) - On Thursday afternoon WCPD responded to Target for a report of a suspect who brandished a machete. He did not make it out of Target with any valuables. WCPD quickly responded to the area and after a foot pursuit into a construction area near WC BART, WCPD officers apprehended Angel Rodriguez, a 31-year-old male from Richmond who is on parole for robbery. - If you've ever run into a group of artists painting at easels in a park, you were probably witnessing a plein air paint-out. Nancy Roberts has been organizing plein air paint-outs for about 25 years and currently plans events for the Contra Costa Plein Air group and the Concord Art Association. The French Impressionists of the 19th century called painting outdoors "en plein air," which means "in the open air." Besides the physical challenges, you need to paint differently when outdoors. You must work quickly and deliberately. Roberts has organized plein air outings to Markham Nature Park, Lime Ridge Open Space, Todos Santos Plaza and Bayview Circle Park, to name a few. She will be at the Concord Art Association's Plein Air Paint Out on May 13, scheduled in conjunction with the Concord Historical Society's spring tea at the Concord Museum Event Center. - Kathy Cabrera, Thorpe recall leader, penned an editorial for the Antioch Herald. In part, she said "First, the Committee to Recall Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe would like to thank those that have come out to sign, volunteered and who have donated towards the Recall Initiative." She also gave a progress update: "We have 8,000 signatures and 9,511 is what is required to put the initiative on the ballet. Our goal is 10,000 signatures. So, 2,000 more signatures is needed with a little less than 3 weeks to go!! Our pro signers as well as volunteers are still working hard throughout the city to get us to our goal." You can read the letter, in its entirety, here. (Antioch Herald)
- On Friday night at approximately 8:00 pm, Antioch Police Department officers responded to a domestic call on W 20th Street for a report of a stabbing. While on scene, police located a victim with multiple stab wounds, also a second person with facial injuries. According to sources, the victim was stabbed at least 48 times and is expected to survive. A suspect is in custody. Antioch Police have not released any information on the incident. Today in Concord:
- Benicia High School Marching Band is hosting its 27th Annual Classic Car Show. The event will showcase 300-400 classic cars and will be a fun day filled with vendors, food, raffles, a beer garden, live music and more at First Street Green in Benicia. (9:00 AM)
- Eating in Season is the best way to get the most flavor out of your farm-fresh fruits and vegetables. The Walnut Creek Farmer's Market has vegetables, fruits, cheeses, smoked fish, cheesecakes, bread and pastries, seafood, eggs, hummus, pasta, microgreens, tamales, honey, flowers, pork, lamb, and goat. (9:00 AM)
- The Kiwanis Club of Concord is hosting its Kiwanis Club Crab Feed 2022 at Molli Restaurant in Concord. All-you-can-eat salad, bread, pasta, and crab while supplies last. No-host cash bar, door prizes & 50/50 raffle. (5:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- Whenever one door is closed, somewhere another is opened. Lemon, in Danville, after almost five years in business starting as a pop-up where Lottie's Creamery is currently located, is closing. The owner moved to Nashville. But don't despair! Try Cantinho Do Brazil instead! Cantinho Do Brazil opened recently in Danville where Hartz Cafe used to be. Check out its menu here.
- I think this is really cool. The Concord Historical Society interviews long-time residents and records these interviews on cassette tapes. These are then transcribed and are printed and filed at the Resource Center. You can buy the tapes or print the transcripts from the archives. I think stories of actual people, told by actual people, are way better than history books. My problem would be choosing which of the many, many recordings to listen to first!
- Bring all your family and friends to enjoy the United Antioch Kiwanis Club BBQ Fundraiser on May 7. There will be grilled tri-tip, chicken, sausage and more! (Antioch Herald)
