Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. The Pioneer has updated its summer calendar of events! Check out all of the National Night Out activities that are going on in the region. You can also find concerts, classes and more going on near you. There are no more excuses to stay in! Head out into the community and have some fun! (The Pioneer)
  2. The Antioch City Council voted to approve housing and services for the unhoused at the Executive Inn on E 18th Street in Antioch. The facility would make 32 new rooms available. The two-year lease will be paid from $2.6 million in ARPA funds that the city has to allocate. The council voted to approve the item in a 3-2 vote with Barbanica and Ogorchock voting against. (East County Today)
  3. You know that stunning Spanish-style home in Orinda that won the 2011 (Orinda) Mayor's Award for Excellence in Architecture? It sold recently for about $2.7 million. The beautiful home was the mastermind of a woman from Spain, working with local architect Fred Hyer. "Clients are the real drivers of what we, as architects, get to build, and contractors are the ones who do the actual putting together of the vision we set down on paper," he said. "I am grateful for the wonderful team of owner and contractor I had the fortune to be a part of on this project." The homeowner passed away last year and her daughter, who lives a few doors down, sold the property. She talked about what made the home so special. "Seeing how happy it made my mom," said Grillo. "And the Spanish architecture to honor her heritage. Her maiden name was Rubio, she was born in Barcelona Spain." It's wonderful that her mom had such a legacy to leave behind for another family to make great memories in. (The Orinda News)
  4. San Ramon Valley High School alums Peter Finlayson and brother, Dr. Sam Finlayson have founded a non-profit organization to support research for a neurological condition known as hydrocephalus. They both also happen to have been on the water polo team at the high school. Now, the current water polo team is doing something extraordinary to raise money for this cause. They will be swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco, alongside the Finlayson brothers. Along with the high school team, several others will be joining the swim. In fact, the fundraiser, capped at 45 swimmers, is sold out. I'd say "that's cool," but the fact is, it's downright frigid! Though registration is closed, the nonprofit is still collecting donations for this year's fundraising, with around $42,000 so far toward its $75,000 goal for 2022. The SRVHS team has raised $3,059 toward its goal of $7,500. To learn more, visit donate.teamhydro.org. (danvillesanramon.com/ subscription may be required)
