Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of over 16,000 semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, including five students in Concord. Fewer than one percent of U.S. high school seniors are chosen as semifinalists in the prestigious competition. About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of them will go on to win a National Merit Scholarship. From Carondelet High School, Elise Coyle, Marie Daniel, Macy Lehrer, made the semi-finalist list. From Clayton Valley Charter High School, Jessica Johal is a semi-finalist and from Ygnacio Valley High School, Iris Khaund also made it to the semi-final round. Congratulations to all! 2. It's gonna be a wet weekend, Concord! Just a couple weeks after record high temps hit us, this week parts of the Bay Area could see record rainfall. Claycord has a neat map at this link. Click on it and see what the Sunday through Tuesday totals will be across the region. (Claycord.com)
  3. A 70-year-old Danville man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in the case of a pedestrian killed in a crosswalk in June. Danville resident Joyce Huang was crossing the street at Camino Tassajara and Wood Ranch Road when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Steven Seltzer who remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. Police determined that Seltzer failed to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk prompting the DA to charge him with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. (Claycord.com)
  4. This November, Concord City Council seats are up for election in Districts 1, 3 and 5. Mayor Dominic Aliano is running unopposed in his (3rd) district. The other two districts have at least two candidates running for the office as does the Office of the Treasurer. See what their positions are in this article from The Pioneer. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. The Merced County Sheriff Coroner's Office has identified the body of a woman who was found submerged in her vehicle in the California Aqueduct, in the area of Interstate 5 about one mile north of Highway 152, near Los Banos, as as Susan Arlynn Waskow, 77, of Walnut Creek. Witnesses described the vehicle changing multiple lanes and hitting a power pole before it plunged into the aqueduct. The cause of death has not been released and the incident remains under investigation. (Merced Sun-Star via MSN)
