Concord Police Officer Thwarts Attack

A man arrested by Concord police early Wednesday for possessing a controlled substance tried to strangle the officer while he was being transported to the Police Department for booking.

Joshua Richard Carter, a 23 year-old resident of Martinez, was arrested on the 1500 block of Concord Ave. about 7 a.m.

While being taken into the city facility, Carter attacked the arresting officer, attempting to strangle the officer. The officer—as yet unidentified by Concord police—overcame the suspect.

Carter was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Once he is released, he will be taken to the Martinez County Jail. The involved officer suffered minor injuries and returned to duty.

The case will go to the Contra Costa district attorney’s office later this week, and criminal charges may be filed against Carter for possession of a controlled substance, and felony assault and battery on a police officer.

The investigation is ongoing, so no additional details will be released at this time, said Lt. Brandon Richey, Police Department spokesperson.
