Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- Neighbors in Pittsburg are getting tired of the number of fires that have been started in an abandoned golf course there. They say they wake up to the sound of firetrucks more often than they would like and every fire gets a little scarier. Last Sunday one burned 15 acres and came dangerously close to the houses there. Authorities say at least one fire started in a homeless encampment and maybe more. (Patch)
- The shoe thief strikes again! A couple of weeks ago, a North Concord resident had several pairs of shoes stolen from their front porch. On July 15 a porch camera captured another thief pilfering a pair. Could it be the same porch pirate? You can watch the videos and judge for yourself. (Claycord.com)
- Pleasant Hill Mayor Michael G Harris would like to show off his new library. The grand opening will be July 30, but he's so proud of it, he's published a few preview pictures. According to the mayor "a new library has been a dream of mine since I first ran for City Council 20 years ago. My 2002 campaign flier read: 'Pleasant Hill deserves a modern, state-of-the-art library facility that not only meets our current needs but will meet our future needs as well. I am committed to getting a new library for our community.' Now in my fifth term as mayor, that dream is coming true." (Pioneer Publishers)
- Another Rolex robbery in Walnut Creek prompted an ambulance to be called to the scene. A couple returning to their Grover Lane home was confronted by armed robbers and asked to hand over their personal items. It is unclear what the injuries were, but the robbers got away with a Rolex watch and a phone. They escaped in what has tentatively been described as a black Ford Fusion. I'd say "hold on to your watches, Walnut Creek," but it seems like it might be a better idea just to hand them over and avoid the ambulance, if you can. (News 24/680)
- A Contra Costa Sheriff's deputy helped save a detainee's life on Tuesday. The detainee had lost consciousness and the jailor who was transporting him tried to revive him, but was unsuccessful. After alerting deputies, one administered two doses of Narcan. Contra Costa Health Services medical staff then arrived and provided additional doses of Narcan. The man was transported to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez where he later recovered. He was discharged from the hospital Tuesday afternoon. (Contra Costa Herald)
