Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. The Martinez City Council on Wednesday approved a new district election map that proponents say is much more in line with law than the map the council approved in 2017, which critics said split the downtown vote and helped incumbents remain in office. Now, at least two of those incumbents will be voted off the council when their terms expire, unless they move to a new district. The new map keeps the entire downtown in District 1, as well as the west side of the city down to state Highway 4. District 2 covers the central part of the city, north of Highway 4. District 3 covers the east side of Martinez, on either side of Highway 4. District 4 covers the southwest side of the city, south of Highway 4. (Claycord.com)
  2. Contra Costa Con 3 arrives in Concord Sunday, April 10. Special guest stars include actor Academy Award and two-time Golden Globe nominee Eric Roberts. Contra Costa Con 3 will celebrate Star Wars with special guests C. Andrew Nelson (Darth Vader since 1994) and Alan Fernandes (Tusken Raider in the original Star Wars) plus Star Wars characters from Endor Base Rebel Legion. Advance tickets include a free $2 shopping buck https://www.eventbrite.com/e/contra-costa-con-3-tickets-173045803657 (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. Mark Conover, who stunned the American running world when he won the 1988 Olympic Marathon Trials in 1988, died on Wednesday, April 6, at age 61, of a recurrent cancer. Born in Contra Costa County, on May 28, 1960, Conover was a graduate of Miramonte High School in Orinda, California. At Humboldt State University, he earned a bachelor's degree in natural resource planning, and he earned a masters in city and regional planning at Cal Poly. He became a coach at Cal Poly and achieved the distinction of coaching the men's cross-country team to an unprecedented seven consecutive wins in the Big West Conference Championships. A distinguished college coach, Conover also became an inspiring advocate of running as a positive force in times of ill health. Conover lived in San Luis Obispo, with Kelly and their triplets (now 14), girls Audrey and Marley, and a boy, Cordell. (Runner's World via MSN)
  4. Assemblywoman-elect Lori Wilson is the clear winner of Tuesday's Special Election race for the 11th State Assembly District to fill the vacancy created when Jim Frazier resigned at the end of December with one year left in his term. Wilson was the only candidate on the ballot, but she faced an official write-in candidate, Erik Elness of Brentwood. The unofficial results show Wilson garnering 97% of the vote. While the election won't be certified until Wednesday, April 14, she already has an office in the Capitol, according to the Assembly Daily File and an official Assembly website as of Wednesday evening. Wilson also received her committee assignments Thursday morning. (Contra Costa Herald)
  5. A recall effort to oust Antioch Unified School District Trustee Ellie Householder will not head to the ballot after the group seeking to remove her from office has abandoned its efforts. According to a statement, the recall proponents stated since they missed the deadline to place her on the June Primary Ballot, they opted to discontinue their efforts to remove her as it would have placed her the November Ballot and her term ends in November.
