Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors this week approved 29 deputy sheriffs and five sergeants positions to be added to the Office of the Sheriff's budget. "The addition of these deputy sheriff and sergeant positions is in line with my highest priority when I was elected Sheriff in 2010: keeping Contra Costa families safe," said Sheriff David Livingston. (Claycord.com)
- "Most of our infrastructure is in pretty good shape," said Walnut Creek City Manager Dan Buckshi during a May 10 presentation to the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce, "but a few are at the end of their useful life, most notably Clarke Memorial Swim Center and the Community Center at Heather Farm Park, originally built in 1972. We're looking at between $50-60 million dollars for replacement and we don't have those funds sitting in the bank." The city is considering putting a 10-year half cent sales tax on the November ballot. The rationale behind the sales tax increase, rather than a bond measure, is that much of the sales tax would be generated by visitors who also utilize the facilities and services. - From the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District: On Monday, May 9, the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District received a report about a potential illicit discharge within the Walnut Creek channel. The district is currently working with the incident response team from the Contra Costa Health Services Hazardous Materials Program to investigate and identify the possible nature and source of the reported discharge and also mitigate and contain the discharge. - To help finance additional water supplies and expenses related to the ongoing drought, the East Bay Municipal Utility District Board of Directors voted 6-1 to impose an 8 percent drought surcharge on its 1.4 million customers beginning on July 1. The drought surcharge will be applied to customers' flow charges – or the volume of water used. (East County Today)
