Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Contra Costa County has nearly 800 more unhoused residents than it did in 2019, according to the last point in time county survey. That's an increase of about 30% over the last three years. Officials attribute the rise to "collateral impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the community." "Homelessness is one of the most serious issues facing our region," Concord Mayor Dominic Aliano said. "The city of Concord continues to prioritize services to our unsheltered residents, which includes direct outreach and concerted efforts to help them get off the streets." (Pioneer Publishers)
  2. Deputies responded to a home on Mariposa Street in Rodeo Tuesday, after a report of shots fired. They arrived to find one man deceased and another injured. The injured victim, apparently, had leapt from the second story window. The deceased died from a gunshot wound. "Deputies located the suspect in the shooting hiding in the backyard of a nearby home. The man, identified as 23-year-old Joseph Gladney of Rodeo, was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for murder and attempted murder." (News 24/680)
  3. As part of state park week, help the Mt. Diablo biologist remove invasive plants today! For reservations and information visit castateparksweek.org/event/weeding-for-biodiversity/. Can't make it today? No worries! There are more opportunities to participate in State Parks Week during Partnership Day / Volunteer Day on Saturday, June 18. (Contra Costa Times)
  4. Wednesday night the Contra Costa Water District's Board of Directors adopted a temporary drought surcharge as part of its Drought Management Program. The surcharge is effective starting July 1. After conducting an open public hearing on June 15, the Board adopted the proposed surcharge. "For the average customer using 260 gallons of water per day, the surcharge amounts to approximately $0.28 per day; customers achieving the 15% conservation goal will see little to no increase in their total water bill." For details of the Drought Management Program and information on conservation resources go to ccwater.com/drought. (East County Today)
  5. Pleasanton resident Patricia Vicary has completed at least one half-marathon in every state and Washington, D.C., and now she has written a book about her experience. "Power Walk! My Step by Step Journey to Competitions Across America," is a book about her travels and the grit it took to walk her way to a fit and healthy life. Her next goal, she said, is finishing 100 half-marathons, which she expects to complete this October in Portland. Seriously, this is a woman after my heart. I compete in the walking division of the American River Parkway Half Marathon every year. Walking a half in every state would be quite a goal! (danvillesanramon.com/ subscription may be required)

Are you a Concord resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
