Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- A federal judge sentenced a former FCI Dublin cook, Enrique Chavez, to 20 months in prison for sexually abusing women prisoners. What makes this sentence unusual is that prosecutors only asked for 16 months. Two years is the maximum sentence. "It is not clear to me that even 24 months is enough," U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers said. "What is happening in Dublin is an extraordinary breach of trust." "Chavez is one of five corrections officers charged with sexually abusing incarcerated women at FCI Dublin, which had an informal nickname among staff and inmates as the 'rape club,' according to court records." (Mercury News via MSN)
- K9 Officer Hancock does it again! Concord Police officers pursued a vehicle reported stolen, down Highway 242 on Saturday. The vehicle eventually pulled to the side of the road, but the driver fled on foot. Officer Hancock tracked the suspect to a hiding place under the freeway. Once the suspect saw the canine, he surrendered peacefully. (Concord Police K9 Association via Facebook)
- Contra Costa County needs folks who are interested in serving on the civil grand jury. The service is for a period of one year. Juror selections occur in June and the deadline to apply is March 24. (Claycord.com)
- Las Lomas High School in Danville was placed on lockdown Friday when reports of a gun on campus escalated to a report of an "active shooter." Officers went classroom to classroom to secure the school. Ultimately, no threats to safety were found. (News 24/680)
- A site plan was released for the new Heather Farm Aquatics & Events Center. "The single story, 25,000-SQF facility will boast two pools, a central community living room, outdoor patios/terraces, a continuous walkway around the pond, along with other sustainable features and amenities."
