Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Did you know that Henry Cowell started The Crossings neighborhood between Walnut Creek and Clayton? He set up the Cowell Cement Company harvesting limestone from the hillside. Cowell lost a lawsuit somewhere along the way, and was forced to build the signature smokestack that defined the neighborhood from the early 1900s through 2009, when it was finally demolished, much to the chagrin of a lot of East Bay folks who thought of it as a wonderful landmark. - In a tragic ending to a crash on Manzanita Way and Sycamore Drive in Antioch on Friday, three children who were walking home from school were struck and sustained major injuries. Two vehicles had collided while making a left-hand turn and one of the vehicles was propelled into the three children on the sidewalk. Two of the children were initially located by emergency crews and a third child was found several feet away and also given life-saving services. The children were taken to local hospitals in critical condition. One of the drivers was life-flighted to a local hospital. The other was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Friends of the family of the children have set up a Facebook fundraiser campaign which had raised $1,750 by Monday afternoon. (East County Today)
- From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success in Moraga! Homeowner Dolores Austin planted a redwood tree on her property 60 years ago. What started as a great idea ended in a mess when the roots started wreaking havoc on her foundation. She knew the stately tree had to go. But rather than just cut it down and send the stump to the chipper, she commissioned a work of art from it! A local chainsaw artist made a beautiful eagle sculpture. Her little seed grew into a tree and then into a sculpture for all to admire. And her neighbors? According Austin "They all love it!" (lamorindaweekly.com)
- There is a changing face at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and not everyone is ecstatic about it. The lab, itself, has gone through a transition in ownership from the University of California, to a partnership between the university and three private companies. At the same time, the workforce is transitioning from one of lifetime loyalty to one where the workers are much more professionally mobile. Over 40% of the current workforce has worked there less than five years. That's challenging for an institution where deep core values and institutional knowledge have been the backbone of success for 70 years. The upshot? According to this article from danvillesanramon.com "The lab already has nearly transitioned to a nuclear weapons design facility without any designers who actually tested a device." It's a challenge that the lab and many of the past directors, including one who is 100 years old, are meeting head on. (danvillesanramon.com/ subscription may be required)
- The Contra Costa Library has lots of events for you to check out for Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15. Per a blog post from the library "The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee recruited a Spanish language interpreter for virtual programs and continues to develop ways to best serve you. A group of Spanish bilingual staff from libraries across the county collaborate to ensure you have relatable información en español." Take a look at all of the upcoming events in this post from the library. (ccclib.org)
