Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Crews from multiple agencies responded to a wildfire Thursday afternoon near Brentwood that ballooned to 200 acres by 5:15 p.m. A Sigalert was issued for Vasco Road, which was closed south of the city of Brentwood between Marsh Creek Road and Camino Diablo. Walnut Boulevard was also closed between Vasco and Marsh Creek. (Concord Patch)
- It's gonna be hot this weekend, Concord! PG&E says this is a high risk weekend for potential power outages. The transformers in coastal areas tend to blow at lower temperatures because inland transformers are reinforced for this kind of heat, so be aware that you may experience a power outage. PG&E has some tips for you if the power does go out, like only keeping one lamp on to signal when the power comes back, keeping extra ice to put in your refrigerator for the duration of the outage to keep things cold, and turning on appliances one-by-one when the power is restored. - The Walnut Creek City Council unanimously passed an ordinance Tuesday requiring city gun owners to lock up firearms in a residence. Council member Kevin Wilk explained that the ordinance is about education, not criminalizing guns. "We want to get the word out and promote this ordinance as a way to help prevent accidents, tragedies, and save lives," Wilk said. The ordinance does allow for fully loaded guns in the home, so long as they are locked up either with a trigger lock or in a locked container. Surrounding cities like Antioch and Pleasanton already have laws that require residents to lock up their firearms. (Claycord.com)
- Can you blame the pandemic for not being able to cool off this summer? It seems that you can. There is a national shortage of lifeguards that is being blamed on not being able to certify them in 2020 due to the pandemic. The Town of Danville is working hard to hire more lifeguards and swim instructors for its upcoming, popular summer camps and aquatic programs. Community members interested in a summer position working at Danville's pools (San Ramon Valley High School and Monte Vista High School) can complete an application at: https://www.calopps.org/danville/job-20196746 or contact Amy Cooper at acooper@danville.ca.gov for more information. - The Pittsburg Police Department responded to a report of a male wearing body armor and armed with a rifle on Arlington Drive on Wednesday. When police arrived, the man was cooperative, dropping the rifle when requested to do so. He was detained without incident and later transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
