Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- A new disaster relief mobile unit set up shop in Richmond between 24th and 25th streets. Contra Costa residents who need assistance applying for disaster relief due to the January storms can visit this center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until March 1. At that time, the mobile unit will move to Community Presbyterian Church at 200 E. Leland Road in Pittsburg until March 4. Residents can also visit the recovery center in Danville at 510 La Gonda Way until March 16. (Claycord.com)
- A Sierran Treefrog has a new lease on life, thanks to the Lindsay Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital. The little dude broke his leg and somehow ended up in someone's swimming pool. The hospital gave him a tiny splint and he's now on his way to recovery. And he's cute as the dickens! (Claycord.com)
- A big rig was involved in a deadly crash with a smaller vehicle that shut down Vasco Road on Monday morning. The closure was about 2 miles south of Camino Diablo. The initial investigation indicates that the driver of the small vehicle crossed into the lane of the oncoming big rig, and the vehicles collided head-on. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. (Contra Costa News)
- The Lamorinda communities of Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda are in a friendly battle! Each wants to be the champion of the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge. The Challenge is a partnership between Sustainable Contra Costa and Contra Costa County to help residents reduce their environmental footprint. Nine Contra Costa cities have signed up for the challenge. According to Lafayette Mayor Mayor Carl Anduri, "Moraga has a big lead right now, maybe at about one million, Orinda has about 500,000, and Lafayette has 300,000, so we want to get the word out, catch up, and surpass them." Sounds like everybody wins no matter who wins! (lamorindaweekly.com)
- Are you an aspiring thespian or do you know one? The Orinda Starlight Village Players are holding open auditions for the upcoming season. "The actor audition process is an open call on dates in March and April.... Anyone interested in performing with OrSVP is encouraged to attend." Three productions are scheduled for this season including "The Secret of Chimneys," "It Runs in the Family" and "Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio." (The Orinda News)
