Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Bay Area residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the wonder of the outdoors on New Year's Day at California state parks, some of which are participating in a nationwide event called First Day Hikes. In the greater Bay Area, several parks are participating including Angel Island State Park, China Camp State Park in Marin County, and among others, Jack London State Historic Park in Sonoma County. Participating East Bay parks include Arden Wood Historic Farm in Fremont where naturalists plan to start the year with an easy walk around the grounds starting at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1. Enjoy the weather, visit the farm animals, and discover something new at the farm. Or check out Environmental Education Center in Tilden Nature Area near Berkeley, there's a "Naturalist's Trail" program from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2. (Claycord.com & Pioneer Publishers)
- The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District has received a $24,000 grant from the state to support firefighting efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant comes from a $100 million allocation in the state's 2021-2022 budget toward special districts, which did not initially receive the COVID-19 relief funding that was dispersed to cities and counties. The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District serves the cities of Brentwood and Oakley and the unincorporated communities of Discovery Bay, Bethel Island, Knightsen, Byron, Marsh Creek and Morgan Territory. - California Highway Patrol investigators were called out to eastbound SR4 between San Marcos and Bailey Road after gunfire broke out — with one person hit and being treated for unspecified wounds. The shooting was reported just before 7 p.m. on Sunday. (News 24/680)
- The Pittsburg Police reported that at 11:45 pm Saturday, officers responded to the T-Mobile store regarding an alarm sounding. There officers observed a woman fleeing the location carrying over $3,000 in merchandise. The woman was quickly detained, placed under arrest and the merchandise was recovered. The woman was identified as 34 year old Rosa Booker. Two other suspects fled prior to officers getting to the business. (East County Today)

- To help find more "fur-ever" homes, Valley Humane Society is waiving all pet adoption fees through Dec. 30. Hurry in for your furry friend!
- Twin Oaks Senior Residence will be a mixed use affordable senior community, restricted to ages 62 and over only, to be located at 2605 Main Street, Oakley. The Project will be a single interior corridor, 3-story elevator serviced building with 130-units: 98 one-bedroom/one-bath units, 31 two-bedroom/one-bath units, and 1 two-bedroom managers unit. Pre-leasing for the facility will start in January. You can start your application process here.
