Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- Hate the thought of April 15 — tax day? Don't give it another thought! California storm victims now have until May 15 to file their taxes. That's right. Folks who live in counties under federal emergency declarations have an automatic extension for their tax filing. Contra Costa is one of those counties. You don't have to do a thing to get the extension. "Eligible taxpayers will also have until May 15 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts." Now, you can hate the thought of May 15 instead. (Claycord.com)
- Folks traveling into Antioch on Highway 4 had an especially stinky commute yesterday. That's because 3,000 pounds of human waste were spilled near the Somersville Road exit! Authorities said it was from "porta potties" in the area. "A HazMat team responded to clean up the spill, but it does not pose a threat to the public, county health services said." The ramp was closed for hours, but, honestly I think all they had to do was tell people what the mess was and nobody would have gone near that exit! (KRON San Francisco via MSN)
- The recent storms are wreaking havoc everywhere, including under the pedestrian bridge on Alhambra Avenue in Martinez. The footing is eroding making it dangerous to cross Alhambra Creek on that bridge. The city is asking pedestrians to avoid the bridge, and will remove it as soon as possible. (Claycord.com)
- Now, the county probation department can come to you, thanks to some spiffy new "sprinter-style recreation vans" that the county purchased and is using as offices for probation and pretrial services. "This innovative approach eliminates clients' need to travel to their local probation office to satisfy a court requirement or receive needed services. Mobile service delivery can potentially engage clients effectively and efficiently, saving them money, time, and other resources." (News 24/680)
- John Muir Health will purchase the remaining interest in San Ramon Regional Medical Center from Tenet Healthcare, to become the sole owner of the medical center. The acquisition is subject to FTC approval, and the two entities will continue to operate under the current structure until that approval is obtained. (News 24/680)
Today in Concord:
- "Please join [Monument Boulevard Animal Hospital] for our official grand opening! It is National 'Dress Up Your Pet Day' so we are encouraging the community to come with their pets dressed in their best!" (1:00 PM)
- Head out to Cap's Restaurant in Brentwood for the best Elvis impersonator dinner show around! "James Clark is a Nationally Acclaimed Elvis Tribute Artist, rated top 10 in Las Vegas King of Kings." (7:00 PM)
- Careless Whisper Band will be at Dan's Irish Sports Bar in Walnut Creek. (9:30 PM)
From my notebook:
- "Yesterday evening, at the January 10th City Council meeting, the City in partnership with the Greater Concord CA Chamber of Commerce recognized three businesses for their outstanding contributions to the Concord community. Those businesses are Cobham Satcom, Pacific Service Credit Union, and Smile Family Dentistry" (City of Concord, California via Facebook)
- "Join STAND!'s team as we work to end the multigenerational cycle of violence and abuse in our community. Work from home opportunities, competitive pay and benefits! Read more at www.standffov.org/jobs" (STAND! For Families Free of Violence via Facebook)
- At Concord's Comfort Food Month, "all month long, indulge in Concord's most delicious, decadent eats and treats.
