Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. The first Bay Area baby of 2023 was born right next door, in Walnut Creek at Kaiser Permanente! He was born at 12:06 a.m. The runner-up wasn't even close, being born at 12:20 a.m. at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara. (Claycord.com)
  2. Concord and the whole East Bay was a mess on New Year's Eve, with mudslides and flooding and general weather chaos. People were rescued from flooded homes and roadways by first responders in kayaks and paddle boards. It was all quite a spectacle. Thankfully, the people over at News 24/680 had their cameras out. Check out the snaps of the sogginess! (News 24/680)
  3. The Orinda Union School District is facing some tough times in the face of inflation, so its leaders are proposing a new parcel tax for residents. "According to the district, OUSD's per student [state] funding amounts to around $8,500, while the state average for that funding falls between $10,000 and $11,000." The district supplements that funding with parcel taxes. Right now, those taxes make up about 12% of OUSD funding. "The new parcel tax would require a two-third approval from voters, and a decision regarding whether the tax will be determined via local election to be examined by the Board of Education." (theorindanews.com)
  4. As if Walnut Creek didn't have enough water from the atmospheric river that came through Saturday, apparently a water main also broke there on Sunday morning! The break closed part of eastbound Ygnacio Valley Road near Oak Grove Road. (Claycord.com)
