Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- Well, we're on flood watch again, Concord. The National Weather Service put the entire Bay Area on watch beginning today and through Sunday. The East Bay could get 1.5 to 2 inches and winds could be as high as 40 miles per hour overnight tonight. "Scattered thunderstorms are also possible, with small hail, brief heavy rain and a few lightning strikes." (Claycord.com)
- Contra Costa Public Works isn't just sitting around waiting for the storms. The department's crews are out there getting ready, "clearing storm drains, catch basins, roadside ditches, monitoring and maintaining flood control channels and stocking sandbag stations in preparation of the coming storms," according to Kelly Kalfsbeek, Community & Media Relations Coordinator for CCC Public Works. For a list of sandbag stations, visit: www.contracosta.ca.gov/sandbags. (Contra Costa Herald)
- Police responded to a call from a resident in the area of Sylvaner Court and Easley Drive in Clayton. The caller said someone had stolen their catalytic converter. Police arrived at the scene within 5 minutes of the call and found a suspicious vehicle which they determined had license plates that did not match the vehicle. Inside the vehicle they found "a power saw, multiple saw blades, hand tools and another license plate that did not belong to the vehicle." They noticed an adult male hiding in the bushes nearby, and detained him without incident. The caller's surveillance video revealed the same adult male near the car in question. The adult male was booked on multiple charges. (Claycord.com)
- Roads were closed in Pittsburg in the area of Stoneman Avenue at Briarcliff Drive just outside of Black Diamond High School on Tuesday night, due to a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision. The incident happened at approximately 7:14 p.m. Officers are still investigating. (Contra Costa News)
- Following Senator Glazer's statement on BART Inspector General Richardson's resignation, BART Director Debra Allen issued a statement of her own. Allen's statement echoes Glazer's statement that Inspector Richardson's resignation wasn't a surprise. Allen also agrees with Glazer that the resignation is likely due in part to a lack of support, and undermining, from the BART Board and BART General Manager. "This 'pattern of obstruction,' as cited by the Alameda County Grand Jury report of June 2022, limited Ms. Richardson's ability to conduct independent oversight and ensure the responsible use of public resources," Allen said. (Contra Costa Times)
Today in Concord:
- "Come join us for an informative and lively moderated panel discussion with dynamic women who work in non-traditional careers" at Strong Enough Women Leaders in our Community at the San Ramon Community Center. (7:00 PM)
- It's Comedy Night at Firehouse Brew & Grill in Martinez. (7:30 PM)
- Learn to Salsa and Bachata on a new dance floor at Vinnie's Bar in Concord. (8:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- "Registration is now open for several events hosted by the Contra Costa Water District. These free events give their customers a behind the scenes look at the incredible system that reliably delivers high-quality water 24 hours a day, seven days a week." (Claycord.com)
- "More than 50 new lifeguards are sought for the 2023 swim season to work at 12 East Bay swim facilities, which include lakes, lagoons and swimming pools. The Park District is accepting applications through March 27 for seasonal, full-time lifeguard positions from May through September." (Concord Patch)
- It's about to get really, really wet around here. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office has a bunch of emergency resources you should know about. Find them on this county website.
