(Patch Media)

Hey, neighbors! It's me, Jeri Karges, your host of the Daily. Here are all the most important things to know about what's happening in the community today. Today you'll learn about these stories and more...

  • The Concord City Council approved a $7M grant program for local nonprofits partnering to help the community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are already open! See if your nonprofit qualifies.
  • Guitar instructor Rex Lee Bell was taken into custody in San Ramon, accused of lewd and lascivious acts committed against a child.
  • Jaycee Lee Dugard's rescuers recently took the stage in South Lake Tahoe to tell her story and theirs. It's a tough read, but an interesting one.

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 83 Low: 57.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Concord who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Concord Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. At its Sept. 27 meeting, the Concord City Council approved a $7M grant program for local nonprofits partnering to help the community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants will be in the amount of $50,000 to $2 million. The grant application period opened on Sept. 30 and will run through Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. The City Council is expected to award the grants on Dec. 6, 2022. (Claycord.com)
  2. An accident at approximately 1:25 a.m. on the morning of September 30 claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman. Her identity has not been announced. The solo vehicle accident happened on northbound Treat Blvd., at Kingswood Drive. Concord Police are looking for witnesses to the accident. Any witnesses are asked to contact Traffic Officer Nanthasiri at 925-671-5096. (Claycord.com)
  3. It's a big year for Clayton resident Alair VanOutrive, who celebrated her 100th birthday this year! She's not only had a big year, she's had a big life! She's lived everywhere from Hawaii to the Philippines to Concord and Clayton. After her husband of 50 years died in 1993, VanOutrive moved to Magalia. Unfortunately, she lost her house in the Camp Fire in 2018. That drove her to move back to Clayton, where she celebrated her birthday in style, riding in the Clayton 4th of July parade. Happy Birthday, Alair! (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. Rex Lee Bell, 69, was taken into custody by San Ramon police on charges of lewd and lascivious acts committed against a child. Bell is a registered sex offender. The allegations are that the acts occurred during a guitar lesson in San Ramon. Bell is currently in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility with bail set at $9,950,000. (News 24/680)
  5. The Jaycee Lee Dugard case is a difficult part of Antioch history. In 1991, she was kidnapped in South Lake Tahoe. We now know that Philip Garrido was her kidnapper, and he brought her to his mother's house in Antioch, where she was found 18 years later with her two daughters by Garrido. The three people responsible for finding her and bringing her and her daughters to safety got together in South Lake Tahoe recently to talk to the public about their experience. This is a well written account of Jaycee's story and the heroes that found her. It's not a fun read, but it may be an important one. (South Tahoe Now)
