But first, today's weather:
Plenty of sunshine. High: 80 Low: 56.
Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Human remains that were found in the town of Pioneer in Amador County may belong to Antioch woman Alexis Gabe. Gabe went missing in late January and police believe her ex-boyfriend, Marshall Curtis Jones, was responsible for her murder. Jones was killed in a shootout with police in June. According to SF Gate, "Gabe's family discovered a handwritten note in a trash can belonging to Jones' sister. According to Gabe's parents, Gwyn and Rowena Gabe, the note contained directions and specific notes on how to get to Pioneer, with details such as notable landmarks and time estimates. Gabe's family believed that this is where he planned to hide the body." Gabe's family believes the remains may be hers, though DNA testing could take several months. (SF Gate via MSN)
- Officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Monument Blvd. and Reganti Dr. on Friday due to multiple vehicle code violations. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded firearm. Upon further inspection, it was found that the gun was equipped with a full-auto switch. According to the Concord Police Department, "The arrestee has a history of arrests for weapons violations as well as narcotics and violent offenses." Thank you, Concord PD, for getting another dangerous criminal off our streets! (Claycord.com)
- Did you hear the polka music coming from Clayton this weekend? Oktoberfest returned to downtown Clayton after taking 2 years off due to the pandemic. According to The Pioneer "Guests in attendance found familiar sights such as an authentic Munich biergarten and traditional dance music from The Internationals." The event was hosted by the Clayton Business & Community Association and by all accounts it was a screaming success. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, a pedestrian who was attempting to cross N. California Boulevard at Civic Drive in Walnut Creek was struck by a vehicle that left the scene, according to bystanders. The woman who, according to News 24/680, was a local business owner, later succumbed to her injuries. The car that hit her is described as a brown or gold Toyota Camry with front end damage and a broken headlight. The woman has not been identified by authorities. (News 24/680)
- The Contra Costa County Library's countywide reading program called Read Contra Costa, has begun. The first day of the campaign was Saturday and the book that was chosen this year is "Portrait of a Thief" by Grace D. Li. The book was chosen by the vote of library patrons across the county. The program's goal is to encourage everyone in Contra Costa to read and discuss the same book. There will be "several virtual events that complement the themes in the book, as well as an interview with the author." Read Contra Costa runs from October 1 through November 15. So head out to the library near you to borrow the book, or grab a copy off Amazon and let's talk! (East County Today)
