Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton's husband, Alvin C. Bernstine, has been named as a defendant in a child sex abuse case. The case alleges that a named sex offender who was twice convicted of sexually abusing at least five minor girls was hired by Bernstine to work at his church as a youth choir director. Bernstein was the pastor of the church. Becton's spokesperson Ted Asregadoo said in an email Wednesday, "Dr. Alvin Bernstine and Diana Becton were married in 2020. The events listed in this civil suit occurred in 2012. These civil claims substantially predate their marriage. As such, Diana Becton is completely unrelated to the civil claims which stem from a decade ago." (Claycord.com)
  2. The incumbents for Contra Costa County district attorney and sheriff-coroner will be joined by their respective challengers on May 3 at the "Contra Costa County Public Safety Candidates' Forum." The event is being held in-person and livestreamed, with DanvilleSanRamon.com staff moderating. There will be a Q&A session as part of the program. (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. Cherry season is finally here! Opening day kicks off tomorrow at G&S Farms in Brentwood and you're invited to come out and pick some cherries off their trees, no appointment needed! You'll get a beautiful day in the orchard with your family, great stories to tell around the dinner table and the cherry tart for dessert with cherries that you picked for yourself will just be the "cherry on top" of the great experience! The orchard is located at Gonsalves Orchard 409 Sellers Avenue, Brentwood CA 94513 (East County Today)
  4. Orinda's Chevron station, located at 11 Orinda Way, has put forth a proposal to replace the station's auto service bays with a new convenience market. The City of Orinda is currently evaluating the proposed changes. Not only will there be a new market, if approved, it will have a deck overlooking San Pablo Creek with seating so you can soak in the view while you eat your snack from the market. (The Orinda News)
  5. Hike for Hope is an annual fundraiser for Hope Hospice. Hope Hospice needs funding for patient care and to keep their grief support services, dementia education, and family caregiver resources that they make available to the community at no charge. The event takes place on May 14 at Del Valle Regional Park, Fiesta Grande Picnic Area, in Livermore, this year, and is the main fundraiser for this important nonprofit. Their goal is to raise $125,000. They need your help! You get to get out on a beautiful trail in the springtime weather and hike at your own pace along a peaceful lake and a few of your closest pals, AND help a great cause while you are at it. How great is that! For more information, visit the Hope Hospice website. (Pioneer Publishers)
