Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- On Thursday, a concerned Northgate student sent an email to Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) school board president Debra Mason in an effort to help save Elementary Instrumental Music throughout the district. The board will be voting on whether or not to cut the music program on Wednesday Feb.23. You can read the student's well thought out and well crafted email (and the board president's disheartening reply) at this link. To help save the music program in the MDUSD, sign the petition on Change.org. (Claycord.com)
- Klaas Kids Foundation has been engaged to help search for missing Oakley woman Alexis Gabe. They will be training Alexis' family and friends in what they can do to augment what police and other authorities are doing. Her family would also like to get the word out on a search next weekend. They are looking for all of the volunteers they can find. You must be 18 or older with a valid government ID and they will train you on how to help. (Claycord.com)
- The city of Concord will have its first storefront cannabis business this summer, after the City Council voted to transform a vacant 4,100 square foot former restaurant space into a retail store. Coastal will open as early as August at 1847 Willow Pass Road in Concord's Park & Shop Center, filling the space previously occupied by STIX Eatery and, before that, McDonald's. Coastal plans to hire Concord residents for the anticipated 26 full- and part-time positions. Coastal has also pledged volunteer service to Concord – four hours per employee per month, where the business pays employees for this time, plus 12 hours per month for the collective owners. - The Clayton City Council is looking to put a parcel tax on the November ballot to stave off a looming $1 million budget deficit predicted by Fiscal Year 2030-31. "Claytonians need to understand there is no Plan B. We have to do something," Councilmember CW Wolfe said at the Feb. 1 meeting. To counter the growing gap between revenue and expenses, city manager Reina Schwartz outlined options including a sales tax, a property tax based on assessed value, a parcel tax and an assessment district. She emphasized that the council had a short timeline, with a June 21 deadline to request a consolidated election with the county. All five council members agree a general parcel tax is the best plan. - The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting that left a 16-year-old juvenile wounded by gunfire Saturday night near the intersection of Vasco and Marsh Creek Roads. The Sheriff's Office was advised that the 16-year-old male juvenile victim earlier arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. (East County Today)
