Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- As you probably know by now, BART started operations 50 years ago this month. But did you know some of the trains are the very same ones that carried passengers way back then? The technology has come light years from then, so keeping those trains on the tracks takes a special form of engineering. "BART mechanics rely on Frankensteined laptops operating with Windows 98, train yard scraps and vintage microchips to keep Bay Area commuters on the rails," according to The Mercury. "We have literally started with a picture and scoured different manufacturers and eBay looking for an oddball part," said John Allen, a mechanic who specializes in breathing new life into broken down BART trains. When Car 372 caught fire in Orinda in 2013, his team created an entirely new system and built their own tools to replace the floor. "Sometimes we don't even know what the name of the part is." If that doesn't instill a lot of confidence in these old trains, meeting the magic mechanics and engineers that make it all happen will. Learn about them in this article. (The Mercury News)
- Concord resident and Diablo Vista Middle School teacher Nicholas Moseby was charged this week with two counts of committing lewd acts against a minor and one count of showing pornography to a minor. The victims were 15 years old and 14 years old and the acts allegedly occurred on August 31 and September 4. According to Contra Costa DA spokesperson Ted Asregadoo, authorities are looking for other victims to come forward to strengthen their case. "I think the investigators are reasonably certain there are other victims and they just want those folks to report it," Asregardoo said. Moseby has been booked into the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $200,000 bail. Asregardoo urged anyone with information about the case, especially additional victims, to contact Senior Inspector Darryl Holcombe at dholcombe@contracostada.org or by calling the DA's office. - Smile, Concord! You may be on camera, soon. The City Council unanimously approved placement of 65 license plate cameras around Concord. The selling point was the positive impact they can have on missing persons cases, sideshows and smash-and-grab crimes. "We are close to one of the last in Contra Costa to put in fixed cameras," noted Councilmember Laura Hoffmeister. "Anything that is an aid to the police force and public safety, I am in support of that." (Pioneer Publishers)
- In a triumphant return, Clayton Theatre is set to go live with "Forbidden Broadway's Greatest Hits" Oct. 14-29 at Endeavor Hall, 6008 Center St., Clayton! It was touch and go for a while, but thanks to the generosity of Clayton CARES and the Clayton Business & Community Association the theater was able to stay afloat through the pandemic and return in grand style. For Forbidden Broadway, "the writer, Gerard Alessandrini, takes the lyrics to well-known songs and tweaks them to make them really funny," says managing director Roxanne Pardi. - It was mayhem from Moraga to Oakland on Friday when police spotted a man they believed to be intoxicated driving an Audi A6 sedan in the area of Sandringham Drive in Moraga. The driver made it to Lafayette without capture and then hopped on the freeway. Police, with the aid of a helicopter, followed the driver through the Caldecott Tunnel and into Oakland, where he allegedly rammed a Moraga cop. (FYI, not a great idea if you are both running from the law and under the influence.) After crashing his vehicle, he leapt from that one and found another to carjack. Ultimately, the suspect abandoned that vehicle near the Coliseum and jumped into a nearby RV where he held officers at bay. The unidentified driver was eventually taken into custody at approximately 7:20 p.m. Quite a day for that dude! (News 24/680)
