Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Can you believe it's been 33 years since the Loma Prieta earthquake? I still remember where I was: sitting in my bedroom on the second floor of an apartment building in Walnut Creek, and my roommate was watching the World Series in the living room. I looked out the window and the apartment building next to ours was moving in the opposite direction ours was. I spent the next 15 minutes in the doorframe. Claycord.com has a link to a great History Channel broadcast on the quake; check it out.
  2. On Sunday, a juvenile was arrested in connection with a shooting Saturday night, in the 2700 block of Hutchinson Ct. in Walnut Creek, of "one person of undisclosed age" that resulted in "a non-life-threatening gunshot wound." The 17-year-old is facing charges of attempted murder in what police believe was "an isolated incident between the involved parties." (News 24/680)
  3. Area residents took to the streets in Walnut Creek on Sunday protesting the arrest and, protesters maintain, violent death of Iran's Mahsa Amini, who was arrested in Iran for "wearing tight trousers" and died in custody on September 16. People from around the globe, including in her country, have protested, demanding a change in Iranian leadership. (News 24/680)
  4. Concord's Deb Bouchard is being honored by Daily Points of Light for her work at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience. She started volunteering there more than 20 years ago. She oversees husbandry for mourning doves and band-tailed pigeons at the reserve. One word that volunteering means to her? "Joy," she says. If you've never been to the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, maybe she'll inspire you to go. Deb is an inspiration, with her positive attitude and genuine caring for the wildlife she protects.
