The deceased has been identified as a Bay Point man. The homeowner was not arrested, Concord police said.

CONCORD, CA – Concord police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the city Tuesday night and believe the incident was marijuana-related. The homicide was reported at about 9:20 p.m. at a home in the 4600 block of Phoenix Street off Denkinger Road and involved a homeowner who told police he shot a man he thought was trying to break into his house, Concord police Cpl. Summer Galer said in a news release.

"Officers located an adult male in the backyard of a home suffering from a gunshot wound," Galer said. "Paramedics pronounced the male deceased at the scene."

The county coroner's office identified the deceased as 34-year-old Bay Point resident Daniel Gonzalez.

The homeowner, who called 911, told responding officers that he was awoken by the sound of his doorbell ringing. He told police that a few moments later, someone began kicking the rear door and then broke a window in an attempt to make entry into the home.

"The occupant of the home said he was in fear for his life and fired a gun at the suspect," Galer said. "The homeowner remained on scene, spoke with investigators, and was not arrested."

The police investigation showed the homeowner was involved in marijuana cultivation and distribution.
