Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- A blaze erupted around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday at an apartment complex in Martinez. One firefighting unit was involved and two people were rescued from the apartment. One later succumbed to their injuries. The other injured party was taken to John Muir Hospital in Concord. Neither victim was identified. The cause of the fire is under investigation. - A Concord man was charged with receiving child pornography. Javier Antonio Ramirez was being investigated in a fentanyl overdose case that involved a Contra Costa minor. During the investigation, authorities checked the suspect's phone, and allegedly uncovered "multiple videos and images taken of him having sexual intercourse or engaging in sexually explicit conduct with a minor." Ramirez was taken into federal custody, where he remains. (Concord Patch)
- The Lindsay Wildlife Experience reminds people that this is baby animal season. Baby squirrels may be taking up residence in your trees. The Lindsay Wildlife Hospital notes an uptick in squirrel patients, due to residents trimming their trees. Save a baby squirrel. Wait until November to trim your trees. (Claycord.com)
- Two suspects were arrested in connection with more than 30 vehicle burglaries in the Ellinwood area of Pleasant Hill on February 3 and 4. Surveillance video revealed a suspect vehicle, and police recovered stolen property at locations where that vehicle was spotted.(Claycord.com)
- In her State of the City address, Concord Mayor Laura Hoffmeister highlighted several technological advances since she took office in Concord. "Hoffmeister pointed to the Police Department's use of drones and license plate readers to help solve crimes and find missing persons." She also asked citizens to consider joining Concord's Community Camera Registry program to help law enforcement with a few more "technological eyes" across the city landscape. (Pioneer Publishers)
