Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- The first day of school is just weeks away in the Mount Diablo Unified School District but the district still doesn't have enough teachers for all of its classrooms. The district held a job fair Thursday night. It offered hiring bonuses and hired on the spot to make sure each classroom has a teacher by the time kids return on Aug. 11. (Patch)
- Concord police will be out in force on Saturday night. They will be looking for people driving under the influence. They want to reinforce that "under the influence" doesn't just refer to alcohol. Drugs, both prescription and recreational, may also impair your driving. Though recreational and medicinal marijuana may be legal, driving under the influence of the substance is not. "Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI will pay a stiff price: an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license." (Claycord.com)
- Contra Costa County deputies caught the bad guys again; in this case, though, they were really bad guys. Don-Juan Watson. 19, of Antioch/San Francisco and 20-year-old Jalin Washington of San Francisco are accused of killing 20-year-old Basel Jilani in the unincorporated area of Taylor Road and Gloria Terrace on March 22. They were arrested in Antioch on July 20 and are being held without bail. In addition to murder charges, they are facing charges on theft from Jilani as well as other victims in the Bay Area. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office Investigation Division at (925) 313-2600 or through Sheriff's Office dispatch at (925) 646-2441. (News 24/680)
- Contra Costa County has a program called the Neighborhood Restorative Partnership Program. The program is designed to provide community support for low level misdemeanor offenses, redirecting resources and empowering the community to to come up with solutions that address the harm caused by these offenses and by focusing on restoring all who have been impacted and keeping the perpetrators out of the criminal justice system. "We're opening an East County version of the program next month, and we're looking for Community Safety Panelists to participate in the program," said Ted Asregadoo, CCDA's Office PIO. If you are interested in participating in this program, the applications, deadlines and processes can be found in this article from the Contra Costa Herald. (Contra Costa Herald)
- "The City of San Ramon is pleased to announce the selection of Denton Carlson as San Ramon's next Chief of Police. Carlson, who currently serves as captain with the San Ramon Police Department, was selected following a nationwide search, which included a community member panel, a subject matter expert panel, and an internal staff panel. Carlson has been part of the San Ramon Police Department since it was founded in 2007, following five years serving the San Ramon community as a contract officer with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department." He will replace former Chief Craig Stevens, who retired in March. (East County Today)
