Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Yesterday, the Antioch City Council considered a proposal to hire a community crisis intervention response provider. It will be a two-year pilot program that aims to "reduce the impact of the Antioch Police Department where this program focuses on responses to non-violent and non life-threatening response situations." The funding will come from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). (EastCountyToday)
  2. Martinez Mayor Rob Schroder is retiring, after serving as mayor since 2002. Six people want the job. Three of them are currently serving on the City Council and there is also one council alum running. You can get the lowdown on all of the candidates in this article from Claycord.com.
  3. Did you feel it? An estimated 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit near San Jose yesterday morning and was felt across the Bay Area and as far away as Modesto. It was the largest temblor to hit the region since the 5.4 magnitude Alum Rock earthquake of 2007. An aftershock of magnitude 3.1 hit about 5 minutes later. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury. (NBC Bay Area)
  4. A national scam is hitting us locally and officials want you to be aware. The scammers are using snail mail to send a very official looking letter that says it is a "distraint warrant." According to this picture from News 24/680, the receivers of the letter are notified that they have a tax debt and it's racking up interest. It asks the recipient to send funds to the sender of the letter. It looks like it comes from Contra Costa County authorities, but it does not! Beware! (News 24/680)
  5. The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office has identified Mykaella Sharlman as the victim who was set on fire on the Mokelumne Trail earlier this month. Two men were arrested in the case. This is an ongoing investigation so no other information is being released at this time. (Mercury News)
